A little of this and a little of that

Ian and his team played a great game this morning! The other team was a little taller and more aggressive, but I was proud of Ian and the team! We had nice passes, great shots and we still need to work on moving around to get open more...but we'll get there!

After his game, Ian went with mom and my grandparents back to their place to grab some lunch and then they were headed to see the UNC/NCSU game at 3:30pm. Gavin came home with Cailean and me. We had a good lunch and then Gavin went down for a nap. Cailean went off doing some errands and I did Pilates (yay me!). LOL

We've got a busy week coming up...Monday we sign up for Town of Cary stuff. So, Ian will do t-ball in the summer! Gavin starts swim lessons on Tuesday (every Tues/Thurs for Feb). Cailean has a meeting Wed night, swim lessons on Thursday and I am going out to dinner with some friends, Friday night I'm scrapbooking at the Kirk while Ian heads off to Kingswood for a PTA fundraising event (teachers volunteered to babsit Kingswood kids for $10 6-9pm to help raise money for the PTA!!). Saturday is an 8am basketball game for Ian and a birthday party in the afternoon!

We did register Gavin for pre-school next year already (tell me about it!). He'll go Monday/Wednesday/Friday. We kinda wanted him to go two days a week, but with our situation and his readiness, we went to three days for next year. He's ready and I'm sure he'll do just fine.

Oh and his stats...height: 38.25 inches...weight: 33.7 pounds!!!!

Catching Up

We had a great basketball practice tonight! Go Armadillos! Even Gavin gets excited about going. He did get bonked on the head though because he chose to stand underneath the basket!

Ian had a full day at school today and is looking forward to Fun Friday! Gavin had school today, too. He is back to being shy getting dropped off, but he talks the entire way home when you pick him up from school because he has to tell you everything that happened.

Work is going. I actually have a student caseload this semester, so it is nice to work one-on-one with them. NCSU is getting back on their feet after hearing about Coach Yow's passing. She sure was an inspiration to many individuals. People continue to wear pink to show support.

We're working on Teacher Appreciation Week for Kingswood. I need to sit down and focus on that Friday afternoon and make tons of phone calls! The week will be here before we know it!!

Madeleine is off to Prague!

My cousin left today for her study abroad trip to Prague!!! We called her last night on the way to the Y to go swimming! I'm currently tracking her flight on flightaware. She is a junior in college (Puget Sound in Washington) and is studying abroad this semester. She left today and returns back to CA at the end of May! What a great experience she is going to have!! She is like my little sister to me. We shared a room for over 3 years and many, many summers!!! Maddy, HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We love you and we'll be reading your blog daily! :)

Longtime Friends

Hannah, her son (Alex-almost 11) and daughter (Reagan-almost 4) drove from Clemmons, NC (about 2 hours west of us) to spend the day at our house. Ian was off from school because it was a Teacher Workday, so the six of us had a great time. I think it has been over 3 years before we last saw each other and we can't believe how hard it has been to get together! Our schedules are just so crazy. Hannah and I have known each other since I think 8 or 9 years old. We grew up in neighboring towns and we were on the same swim teams, Central Vermont Wavemakers and the Valley Swim Team. We were best of friends growing up and always managed to reconnect over the last ten years as I traveled the country and Hannah touring the east coast! How we both landed ourselves in North Carolina is beyond me. Anyway, we pretty much vowed that our schedules will not stop us from NOT getting our families together more often. We are planning to meet 1/2 way every few months!

We had so much to talk about that we didn't even know where to start!!! It was funny! We just laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed!!!

It was so cute to see Ian with Alex. Ian thought he was a big shot that he was able to "hang out" with a 5th grader!!! It took about 1 hour or so for Reagan and Gavin to play together. But, they decided to "go camping" in the living room, then play with playdough, chase each other, etc.

Saturday, January 24 was Gavin's birthday party! A few months ago he said he wanted a Polar Express Birthday Party. I thought that was a great idea. Well, if you google that...not much comes up. You have to be real creative to come up with party items because it's not like you can go to Party City and find it as a theme. I actually stamped the invitations. I'll take a picture and post them! They turned out cute and they even included Polar Express tickets. It was at night, so kids could wear their pajamas. Ian and Gavin wore their pajamas and bathrobes (my grandmother made for them). Both had holes in pockets because she wanted them to be like the boy in the movie!!! We wanted my grandparents to be able to attend, so we held it at the American Legion in Cary (no stairs to get in!). Gavin and his friends had a great time!!! We had the PE cd playing during the party as background music. We had the bean bag toss in one corner of the room, Hullabaloo in another corner, had crayons/paper, playdough and blocks in another corner. Kids seemed to be occupied. For snacks we had chips, pretzels, mini hot dogs in the crescent rolls, mini marshmallows/M&Ms mixture on the tables, soda, juice and water. We had blue, gold, black and white balloons to go along with the colors in the movie/book. For plates and napkins we found snowflakes with a snowman holding presents.

The CAKE! Mom tends to be in charge of making the cake. She always outdoes herself each year! This year she made a round, white cake. On top of that cake, she made a Christmas tree cake. Then, around that, she made a Polar Express train cake that said, "Gavin's Polar Express 2009" and she even had teddy grahams as the conductor, hobo, little kids, etc. Oh, she even had like crushed chocolate cookies for the coal or maybe they were mini chocolate chips! AMAZING!!!!

The party started at 6pm. At around 6:30pm, I gathered up the kids and we all sat down in a corner on the floor. Gavin grabbed his snowflake punch and asked for all the tickets because it was time to go on the Polar Express! Way too cute! After all tickets were punched, I read the Polar Express. Well, Gavin was on my lap and wanted to read himself. So he would say, "Once upon a time a boy was on a train..." Ms. Braun...you would have been proud!!! He is watching his big brother read!!!!! We finally made it through the book and when I finished, we heard a knock at the door. Gavin and Ian looked at me and the kids yelled, "SANTA???????????????" They went running to the door and oh yea...SANTA CLAUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cailean's coworker and a good friend of ours, Mel, dressed up as Santa. Gavin told me today that he told Santa he lost his bell that he gave him in his pocket (he looked sad telling me!). Well, Santa asked for Gavin, the birthday boy and Gavin was given the first bell! Each kid at the party was able to sit on Santa's lap and Santa talked to each one and thanked them for coming to celebrate with Gavin and each kid received a bell with "This bell still rings for me as it does for all who still believe." Santa was outstanding!!!! He stayed for a little bit and then left to get the reindeer at the corner store (Gavin asked if his pickup truck was here...Santa "Cailean" told Gavin at his Christmas party that the sleigh was in the shop and so he needed to use a pickup truck) down the street.

I found out later that Santa was standing outside peeking in the window waiting for me to finish and the Cary police drove by and saw Santa and almost came to a screaching halt in front of the Legion!!!!!!! hahahahahahaha

Anyway, Gavin handed out his treat bags to his friends (bell Christmas ornament, candy cane, chocolate bells to eat, train sticker story stuff and a conductor hat) and all the kids in their pajamas went home. For the first time, Gavin actually told me who he wanted to invite. Every child there pays a lot of attention to the little guy!!! We even had my Uncle Jimi from New York here and Jessica (my cousin), Kent, Kaia and Lucas here from South Carolina!

Sledding and then Pre-Birthday Events

Jamie came over one morning with a sled and the boys and Jamie went sledding in the front yard and back yard while I was snapping pictures! The pictures are in the slideshow that I'll post later.

Thursday, January 22 Cailean and I delivered green cupcakes to Gavin's class at pre-school to celebrate his birthday. Cailean picked up a HUGE balloon to bring in to surprise Gavin and he loved it! He was actually a little bashful while we were there. He wanted to sit on my lap the entire time and then he was all shy when the class sang to him!!!

Friday, January 23...GAVIN TURNED THREE YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelieveable!!!!!! Ian had a field trip to Marbles Museum in downtown Raleigh and then they saw an IMAX movie. Cailean met the group down there and was a chaperone (yes, I was VERY jealous). Before Cailean got to Marbles, he dropped off Gavin at NC State and hung out with me for over 3 hours. He was great! The students were having a grand ole time with the birthday boy and my coworkers were excited to see him (especially on his birthday). I just did NOT want to leave him with a sitter all day on his special day! When Ian got home from school, we all went over to mom's and had dinner over there. I made a birthday cake and took it over. Uncle Jimi is in town, so we got to celebrate with him, too. It was a late night for the boys!!! At around 10pm, Jessica, Kent, Kaia and Lucas arrived from South Carolina. We stayed up chatting for a few hours and I just miss them a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday morning we were all at basketball practice. At the end we played a scrimmage against family! It was a blast!!!! We were scheduled to have a game, but since the year round kids had school on Saturday to make up a snow day, the other team couldn't field at least 4 kids (I had 5). So, they had to forfeit.

Okay, the snow can leave now

Another snow day for Wake County schools, so we're home today. They expected roads to be very icy this morning and it's just 16 degrees now!!! YIKES!!! NCSU had a delay, but I'm working from home today since Ian is home from school.

Cailean got home from work yesterday and we headed back outside for round two in the snow. It's nice to look at, but I'm ready for the warmer weather and the snow can leave. hahahaha

Oh, Gavin said a really funny thing yesterday. We were watching the Obama inauguration (are you impressed Aunt Cynthia???!!! hee hee) yesterday and when they announced Aretha Franklin, Gavin puts his fist up in the air and yells, "Franklin!!!" Yes, he thought the turtle that is named Franklin (there are kid books about him and tv shows, etc) was going to be on tv with Obama!!!! Ian and I cracked up laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got to make cupcakes for Gavin's class tomorrow because Cailean and I are headed in there to celebrate his birthday. Tonight we are supposed to have basketball practice and Cailean is at a work meeting at the same time (argh). Gavin will hang out at mom's house during practice and wait for the arrival of Uncle Jimi!

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow

Since yesterday afternoon we started hearing about schools and businesses closing for today because the weather forecast said 2-4 inches of snow in our area! By 10pm last night, our county closed its schools and NCSU would be running on a delay (which ended up closing). The boys knew that they would go to bed with rain and wake up to snow. I probably shouldn't have said that! Gavin was up at 6:30am and Ian was up at 6:40am! That is NOT normal for them!!!!

I wanted to wait until 8am to be nice to the neighbors before heading outside. Well, I think I was just as excited as the boys. So, we were outside before 8am and played for about 1 1/2 hours! Do the boys have real snow gear? No. They had their LL Bean rain boots from Aunt Sandi and I figured that was better than their sneakers!!! Ian sported a Timberland hat and gloves and Gavin wore his Patriots hat and mittens.

We go outside through our back door. Gavin opens it up and yells, "Holy Macaroni!!!" It was hilarious!!! Ian goes bolting by him and lands in the snow and makes a snow angel. Gavin says, "Ian, what are you doing?????" hahahahahaha This is Gavin's first snow experience that he probably remembers! Last time he had to be in the stroller!!! Well, Ian told him what he was doing and Gavin dropped to the ground and made one, too.

Later we headed out front and decided to shovel the driveway. That's right...no snow shovel! I used another shovel of somesort and started. Gavin and Ian grabbed their sand shovels for the park and their buckets and helped me that way!!!!

It's pretty funny about this snow with Ian and Gavin. Cailean and I grew up in VT and lived in the snow for years. Ian and Gavin...it's a new experience for them!!!!!!!

Today the boys and I are watching all the happenings in Washington DC. They are actually into it!!!

Welcome to the world...Liam Michael Cook!

Some of you might know my good friend, Nikki. She was one of my bridesmaids in our wedding and we've been close friends since age 5! Yes, that would be about 29 years and counting! Anyway, she and her husband had a baby boy, Liam on January 15!!!!! He weighed 7lbs 3oz and was 20 inches long. I talked to her twice yesterday and they are doing just fine! Of course Nikki had me laughing hysterically about some of her labor!!!!! I'm looking forward to seeing them in April!

Anyway...congratulations Nikki and Chris!!!

Cailean worked night shift last night, so he came home at around 7am. That forced me to get out of bed and take a shower since the boys and I had to hit the road early and head over for our game. I like to get there early and watch the other teams play!

Ian's game was at 9am and Gavin, mom and my grandparents cheered on the Armadillos. Ian did a great job defending. I matched him up with some tall kids from the other time and he did a great job playing man to man against them. He had a few passes, some dribbling and a few shots. I was proud of him and the team!

From there, Gavin went with mom and my grandparents back to their house. We thought it would be an easier transition that way with Gavin because he LOVES to be with his mommy!!!! The four of them were going to the NCSU men's basketball game and that was starting at noon. Meanwhile, Ian and I headed over to SuperWalmart for some grocery shopping and found some birthday presents for his party today. Nothing like the last minute! Then home to take care of the groceries and wrap the gifts and then we went to Stride Rite. Ian slipped a few times on the court today and his sneakers were looking a bit worn. He had NO tread on the bottoms, so there was ONE pair of lace up shoes left that were 50% off and they had Ian's name on them! He didn't care for them at first, but they were new and they fit and they had great tread. So, we bought them and he wore them to Jackson's party.

I didn't end up staying at the party. Once he saw Jackson and Brock, he took off with them and so Jen told me to go enjoy my time without kids!!! So, back home I went to do laundry and watch the NCSU game! Cailean ended up working second shift today, so he took off shortly after I got home and he'll be home later tonight.

Mom brought Gavin home after the game. I can't believe he wanted to stay for the entire game and it even went into overtime!!!! Mom said he was doing the wolf sign, cheering, sounding like a wolf and enjoying it with his Mimi!!! Ian prepped him with the names to hear for, too!

We stayed in tonight and had dinner together. Afterwards, the boys decided to camp in Ian's room. That included blankets, pillows, lanterns and pretend snoring!!!!!

The boys are tucked in bed now and sound asleep!!!

Half way there...

I'm slacking on the blogging...I really do try to blog every single night, but before I know it...I'm exhausted and ready for bed. I guess I can just come to the realization that our lives are only going to get more chaotic, but that's the way I like it!

Gavin is getting over his sinus infection and taking an antibiotic. There are times when he is his normal self and then there are times when he is just a bear!!!! He took a very good nap today, so that sure did make me happy!

Ian had a good day at school. I really need to figure out this scanning deal. I used to scan and then post his work on the blog, but it's not working for me now. He is writing sentences and he really works hard at it. In the beginning he gave up easily, but not as much now. He enjoys his sight words, too. He has one homework sheet to complete a week, which is nice. But, it's making time for the day-to-day learning/remembering of all the sight words, topics being discussed that week in school, etc. The Kindergarten teachers do a great job sending home a weekly newsletter to the parents to keep us in the loop and then we know what to work on with Ian at home. It doesn't leave us much time. We get home at 4pm. We have dinner around 5:30ish, baths, books and bed at 7pm. We manage though. I'm pretty strict about the 7pm bedtime! If the boys go to sleep later...then I can really tell the difference the next day. For the most part though, we get them to bed as close to 7pm as we can and both are out like lights!!!

Cailean is keeping busy at work, of course. The boys are very interested in the number of planes broken, what's wrong with the planes, etc. They don't seem too interested in what I do at NC State!!! It's all about DADDY'S WORK!!!!!!!!!!!hahaha

My Stampin' Up! has gone to the back burner. Not sure how much longer I can keep that up. The extra money sure is nice, but with coaching Ian's basketball team, working at NCSU and being a part of the PTA at Ian's school and all the other extracurricular activities we do with Ian and Gavin...just taking the priorities I guess. I'm in charge of Teacher Appreciation at Kingswood, so I need to start coming up with information.

A fun weekend ahead...Ian's basketball game Saturday morning. Gavin is going with my mom and grandparents to cheer on the Wolfpack Men's Basketball team at noon while Ian and I are at Jackson's birthday party.

This and That on Monday

I was able to get Gavin in to see the doctor this morning because he still can't seem to shake off what he has had since Dec 22!!! It moved from a viral infection to a bacterial infection, so hopefully the antibiotic will take care of it. I certainly hope so!!!

Ian had a great day at school. He's excited for his field trip, which happens to fall on Gavin's birthday! The work he brings home in his Monday just continues to amaze us. He wrote a sticker story. Wow. I'll try to scan it and post it on the blog when I find more energy. I'm looking forward to volunteering in his class tomorrow. I didn't get to last Tuesday because I needed to take care of some stuff at NC State.

Gavin and I had a nice afternoon together. However, he chose to NOT take a nap today. He won't take one tomorrow either since we'll have a babysitter here. It should be interesting. Anyway, we read quite a few books together before his "nap." He does a great job pointing things out. There were some things I didn't think he would get and he did.

Last night at dinner, Cailean asked Gavin where milk comes from. Gavin's response was, "From the refrigerator." Good answer, right?! It is better than "from mommy!" LOL LOL I remember being told that my brother told his kindergarten teacher that milk came from a box!!!!!! The teacher told him it came from a cow and Matt argued with the teacher. But, he was right. We grew up on the powdered milk!!!!!

We went over to mom's tonight and hung out for a few minutes. Gavin stayed there and Ian, Cailean and I headed to basketball practice. When we picked up Gavin he did not want to leave. LOL Gee thanks! I guess he had a nice time. He was telling his Grammie and Pop-pop that they were going to cheer on the Wolfpack this Saturday at a basketball game.

That sums up our Saturday! There are two Saturdays I work because they relate to the tutor orientation. Yesterday happened to be one of them. I couldn't stay the whole time though because we had our first basketball game! So, went to work in the morning...came home to get Gavin and the two of us went to his friend, Katie's, birthday party. He made a door knob thing at the arts/crafts area and then they had a tatoo/face painting lady there. She is awesome!!! Well, Gavin got a cool looking snake on his arm that is green and blue. Very cool...will need to take a picture! We had to leave the party early to come home and pick up Ian and Cailean to head over to Morrisville for our first game! Ian was AWESOME!!!! He got some rebounds, made some passes, hustled and made some baskets. We need to work on making sure he doesn't have his hands in his pockets when he waits for the ball sometimes!!!! Anyway, as a coach...I was very excited at how well the kids played! They all said they were having fun!!!!!!! :) Mom and my grandparents were there to cheer on Ian and the Armadillos!

We all came home, had some lunch and then Gavin took a nap. Cailean and Ian started the cleaning frenzy and I was cooking up a storm. Cailean had been talking to Tom and David about venison for a few weeks now and they were eager to try his venison. So, we finally coordinated our calendars and Saturday night worked for everyone. We had venison, chicken, salad, au gratin potatoes and then I made some cookies and pumpkin cream cheese roll cake for dessert. I made the kids pancakes and they sure did eat them up! Then, we went outside and started up the fire pit and the kids toasted marshmallows. It was a great time!!

I'm looking forward to Saturday

I should say, "I'm looking forward to Friday..." but that's hard since I have to be at work Saturday morning to help kick off the new tutor orientation at work. The first couple of weeks is always beyond crazy each semester. Somehow we get through it, but it didn't help this year that we had just 2 days when we were back to work before the first day of classes.


Ian is still getting back in the routine of kindergarten. His eating habits really need to change. If anyone has any suggestions, then send them my way. Gavin does okay, for the most part. He does try new food and will even tell his brother that it's good.

Saturday is our first basketball game! It starts at noon! I'm looking forward to it. :) Then at night we're having two families over for some venison and chicken. I need to put together the rest of the menu!!!!!!

We might have some high school kids over on Sunday night for their Progressive Dinner through the Kirk. I asked for more information on that. I think they are in groups of five or six and they start at one house for appetizers, then go to another house for the main course and then to the church for dessert. Cailean and I thought it would be neat to host some students and it would give an opportunity for Ian and Gavin to spend time with the big kids! So, hopefully that will work this Sunday.

Back to School and Overtired

Wow! I forgot what Ian would probably be like after being off from school for 2 weeks! He was a bear when he got home!!!! TIRED! TIRED! TIRED! We had to work hard to keep him awake until 7pm! He wasn't too sure about going back this morning. He told me he wasn't feeling well. UGH! He is Special Friend this week and that's an honor at school. He gave out his snack for today and I guess asked his teacher if he could take home the boxes because of the "box tops." What a kid! We collect them and then turn them in to earn money for Kingswood.

Gavin decided no nap for today. Instead he just babbled in his crib. There are days where he'll go right to sleep for a nap and then other days that he makes it clear he is not tired. So, we're a little unsure if he is growing out of the nap situation.

We got to see Uncle Mickey and Aunt Ellen for a bit today as they are headed back to NY early in the morning. Hopefully Aunt Ellen can make the trip for Gavin's birthday party, but Uncle Mickey will be working out west.

Saturday, Saturday

I couldn't believe I got to sleep in this morning! Cailean woke up with the boys and I stayed in bed until 8:45am! When I finally woke up, I thought I slept the day away...I'm not used to that at all. We had basketball practice at 11am today and it was nice to see the team again after a two week break. I LOVE the fact our team has a great set of parents who help Leslie and I out. It makes all the difference in the world!! We're looking forward to next Saturday for our first game! Go Armadillos!!!!

Ian is really doing a great job with basketball. He is really into it and just loves playing. Gavin was eager to get on the court, but he had to sit on the bleachers with Sammy for the practice!! What a trooper! He'll have his turn in February when he gets to take swim lessons for the first time and Ian will have to watch him.

After practice we made two stops to grocery stores to get items for tonight's dinner. We had the Reids over and I made a pot of homemade spaghetti sauce, 2 kinds of dessert...so we had a nice spaghetti dinner, garlic bread, a beautiful and delicious salad made by Leslie, some appetizers, drinks and dessert. Yea, there went my points for the week!!! The kids had a blast playing. They played the ESPN Zone downstairs, pulled out the majority of the toys we own upstairs and Max and Ian were into the Wii for a little bit before winding down with Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Ian wanted to do some homework this afternoon when Gavin was naping. He wrote down all of his sight words. He is reading books to us, too. Amazing. It's the best to hear him read to us!!!! He really enjoys reading the room and Gavin tries to do the same thing!!!!

I am definitely not looking forward to heading back to our crazy schedule on Monday. UGH!!! Work, school, etc. It'll be hard!!!!!

We've got three birthday parties three weekends in a row this month. Should be a good time!!!!

Happy New Year!

We had a very nice New Year's Eve! The four of us headed over to Tom and Lori's house for their open house. It was sooooo much fun. The kids had a lot of fun together and Gavin wasn't even interested in any of the cookies there because he didn't want to stop playing! Ian and Gavin were excited to see Ella and Sophia, too. They had an incredible spread of food. AMAZING!!! It was so nice to catch up with our friends, too. And whatever they gave me to drink...I want 10 bottles of that! :) hee hee

From there, we headed back home to get the kids in their pajamas before our next party. Gavin really needed and wanted to go to the bathroom, but it just wasn't working for him. He was a little cranky heading down, but he managed. We were the last ones to arrive at the Nelsons. There were six couples and four kids (two were ours). Ian ran off with Luke and Ben and Gavin were attached at the hip. It was great! Lance and Jessica had unbelieveable food there and I brought over pumpkin cream cheese roll cake and chocolate cookies with white chips! We were hoping the kids would watch a movie and fall asleep, but that wasn't the case. All four kids were exhausted, so we actually headed home so Ben and Luke could also get some sleep! We can't believe Ian and Gavin stayed up as long as they did though! Anyway, it was very nice to be invited to some parties!!!

This morning the boys and I headed over to mom's for a little bit to see how they were doing. Came home to lunch and a nap for Gavin. Ian chose to play the Wii for a little bit and he is getting a little too good at baseball!!! I really just wanted to watch football all day, but I knew that would not happen. After dinner, baths and books, it was time for the kids to get into bed and me...well, off to the couch to watch some of the Rose Bowl. UGH. What a score, but still...what an experience for Penn State, right?!
